Curtis (1868-1952) accepted the prevailing notion of Native Americans as a vanishing race and decided to record their legends, languages, traditions, and music for posterity. In a thirty-year project, he took more than forty thousand photographs, interviewed and recorded tribe members, and accumulated heavy personal debt. The effort resulted in his landmark twenty-volume work, The North American Indian.
