A New World 2008 Wall Calendar | A New World Calendar : Wall : 2008 Little is known about sixteenth-century British artist John White. He boasted of making five voyages to the New World, and he may have accompanied an expedition to Baffin Island in 1577. When he came to Roanoke Colony (on the Outer Banks of today's North Carolina) in 1585 as part of an expedition sent by Sir Walter Raleigh, he spent his days sketching the area's people and wildlife. The twenty-two White watercolors reproduced in this calendar convey his struggle to see clearly in a land where all seemed strange and new.
