Hired by happenstance to design a poster for one of Sarah Bernhardt's theatrical productions, he finished it in just a few days. The profoundly innovative poster earned its creator instant fame. Before the poster, Mucha had been a capable illustrator but an unremarkable painter who kept his "real" art safely in the Academic mode.
